Scientists at CERN have observed the creation of neutrinos in the Large Hadron Collider! Advancements in science never cease to amaze and excite me, but this event, in particular, is especially noteworthy to me because of its relation to one of my most recent posts.
In the post itself, I mentioned how hard it is to detect neutrinos, which led to their other moniker, “ghost particles.” Indeed, this is the first time they have been detected in a collider. This difficulty makes their detection through particle colliders even cooler. Furthermore, the high energy they possess when formed through collisions hasn’t been extensively studied since scientists detect neutrinos more commonly in low-energy forms as very faint bursts in underground detectors. Finally, I am even happier to see that this discovery is from CERN, a laboratory I love dearly.
